Describe your current work – what organization are you with and what is your job title?
I work with Oaktree Outdoor Advertising, a locally owned billboard company. Here, my title is Director of Business Development.
What are your primary responsibilities in this role? And how does this align with your passion and philosophies?
My responsibilities are to grow new business. I love working with local businesses to help them grow. As a business, Oaktree Outdoor Advertising loves to support local growth in Lancaster, whether that is a nonprofit organization raising money for its mission or a new business getting started. We have a big heart for helping other businesses thrive so that our community and economy grow together.
What do you feel makes Oaktree unique from other media companies? And tell us about the inspiration behind the name!
We can’t give away all our secrets! We like to think that what makes us unique is the secret sauce to our track record of success, so you’ll have to work with us to find out. What I can share is that we recognize how the last two years have been so hard for many small businesses. I believe we have worked very hard to overdeliver to our clients to help them through this time. Oaktree Outdoor was a baby acorn that grew from our parent companies, Oaktree Development Group and The Lancaster Barnstormers baseball team. Over the years, we have expanded from one billboard to now close to 50. We understand the value of slow and steady growth and forming a community of like-minded businesses that support one another as they strive for progress.
You have a personal connection to Mid-Atlantic Media Hub’s owner, Tom. Can you tell us more about how you and Tom met?
I have known Tom Vranich since high school (Left: Tom and Jamie Vranich golfing with Susan and her husband). We started off knowing each other on a personal level, which has developed into a professional working relationship between our businesses. Though I’ll spare him any embarrassing stories, I can say that Tom is one of those rare people who is steady and true throughout the years. He has always been a great guy for as long as I have known him. That continues to serve him well in his business and as he serves his clients with Mid-Atlantic Media Hub.
Before Oaktree, where else did you work, and how have these experiences helped to shape your advertising expertise?
I spent 12 years at Clipper magazine first in a sales role and then moving into management. From there I worked at a production studio and was on the content creation side. I was Director of sales, selling national home product companies custom-designed sets to display their products for new product launches. It was helpful and interesting to see how the idea for marketing a product started as a seed and grew into a magazine ad or a tv commercial. I like to think after almost 20 years in the sales, marketing media world, I do well working with clients to create smart, well-thought-out strategies that not only meet their current needs but position them for future growth.
And finally, tell us more about you personally! Outside of work, where do you enjoy spending your time? What are your hobbies and passions?
I am a mom of three kids. Two boys and one girl. I have been married for 18 years to my husband, Blaine. My current outside of work, life consists of me trying to teach the boys how to drive, which means I come back to the house and have to mix myself an adult beverage! All the kids are pretty active in sports, so my time is spent juggling between their practices and games. A recent highlight was that I decided to try golfing, and Jamie and Tom Vranich were there to help coach me (Left: Tom giving Susan a golf lesson). This underscores our personal and professional relationship that works so well together!
